Richard F. Hill, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist

My orientation is primarily existentialist and humanistic, but I also draw on psychodynamic and family therapies. To me a client’s inner life is important, in particular, how can this be enriched, how can this be realized to fuller capacity? People are involved with both others and the deeper parts of themselves by their very nature: all parts of a person’s life affect a person’s experience. I invite people to discover that their experiences lead them to their inherent dignity and a pervasive spirituality of life. The result is often that clients find new meaning in their lives, as well as heal old wounds. They uncover their potential for self determination and self actualization. They begin to heal the traumas of abuse and abandonment. They begin to grow in new and unpredictable ways.

Basically this is why clients work with me for extended periods of time – the inner richness they begin to discover runs deep. My clients span all ethnicities and are primarily adults of all ages, although I also work with adolescents and sometimes younger children. I am effective in crisis intervention and generally work with individuals, but I also see groups, families, and couples.

My academic qualifications are:

  • Licensed Psychologist –California

  • PhD Clinical Psychology - ITP

  • MA Counseling Psychology – ITP

  • MA Spirituality - Santa Clara University

  • MBA, BS Business - University of California, Berkeley

I am married and have two grown children. I speak French, German, and Dutch. Psychotherapy is my second career and previously I worked in the corporate world in the Silicon Valley. At this stage of my life I am not focused on material gain. Accordingly, I founded CHL to meet the needs of people who have trouble paying full professional psychotherapy fees. At CHL clients pay less (and therapists earn less) than is common.
